SEO Tutorial for WordPress Blogs and Bloggers

I’ve been blogging for almost two years and didn’t know much about search engine optimization techniques when I got started, so I’ve got battle tested wisdom that I’ve used to climb the Google rankings for a number of terms. So I understand the stresses and frustrations of bloggers on WordPress with respect to SEO.

To that end I’ve created this search engine optimization tutorial to help out bloggers of all shapes and sizes to make their jobs easier. If it helps you please help me
out with a link from your blog. I would really appreciate it. Doing SEO without guidance can very much be like a trail by fire as you try to find the magic answers to what Google and users want from the content your website.

I was reading Yoast today, who is a WordPress designer, and he pointed out some great tips for WordPress SEO that I though SEO enthusiasts like yourself might be interested in. Yoasts tips on the SEO for WordPress issue are incredibly helpful.

Search Engine Optimization Tips and Techniques for WordPress Blogs and Bloggers

1) Keywords, Market Research, and SEO for WordPress.
Take a tip from keyword data. However its just tells you about 50-65% of what you need to know. Keyword data tells you exactly what customers are searching for.

    • This will allow you to target long tail key words as well as fat belly ones.
    • Google can’t however tell you extremely long tail or time sensitive searches, because about 1/3 of google searches are entirely original. Keep this in mind when developing content and keywords for seo.
    • Google’s keyword tool is sufficient for most
    • Google has a new feature will also allow you to plug-in your website and it will suggest keywords for you, called the Search based key word tool
    • Create a Microsoft doc or spread sheet for the top 5 to 25 terms you are targeting
    • One other way to use keyword data is to look at what keywords people are searching for a year ago that are seasonal.
    • Aim for BOTH the fat belly and the long tail of search.
    • Consider getting a URL with your keywords in it or naming your blog with your keywords.
    • Helpful hint: If your blog name is a mouthful, people will likely just link to your name.
    • Divide your keywords into three groups: green, yellow, and red or whatever groups you happen to like. This can help you prioritize your most important words throughout your seo campaign.
    • Added hint: Switch the permalink structure in WordPress so your URLs have more of your keywords and Google can understand what your posts are about.

2) Target Keyword Subjects and Theme for SEO

    • Arrange your wordpress blog in a silo or themed format, with the main subjects covered representing each silo.
    • Focus your keyword targeting on a limited number of terms for more targeted seo.
    • Focusing on siloed or themed content makes it easy for Google to index and focuses your content more on the words you really want to be ranking for. I don’t practice hyper-strict siloing, but its helpful for understanding how Google views your site via its spiders.

3) Usability and User Experience and SEO for your WordPress Blog.

    • Write for humans, not search engines. Cory Doctow’s advice to write like a newswire can be very helpful in some fields, but does take humans somewhat out of the equation.
    • Consider writing interesting and very clickable headlines for humans. Web copywriting tips.
    • Use related key terms for better latent semantic indexing and SEO.
    • Add e-mail subscription options to your blog to increase return visits, community, and conversation. Feedblitz is a great service from blog email subscription.
    • Create high color contrast between your subscription button area and the rest of your blog.
    • Include a call to action on your subsciption. Tim Ferris does this well, as does Chris Brogan.
    • The high degree of usability of the Future Now e-mail subcription list and the resources section for list bait is quite compelling. (list bait is simply using a resource or link bait to get people to join your email list. For instance these website conversion resources list bait is fantastic from Future Now)
    • Learn about blog branding 101
    • Highlight your best posts. One great plug-in by Alex King is Popularity Contest.
    • One other way to highlight your best posts is creating an articles widget. Alex King the ever helpful plug in developer has an articles widget as well.
    • Landing page related posts called landing sites. This may or may not be redundant with other related posts widgets. At the very least it increases your options in a strategic way. The aim is to decrease bounce rate and increase retention.

• Look into adding visuals with free stock photos.

4) Tips and Techniques for Linking for SEO

    • Just a hint: there are two types of linking onsite and offsite. Building both types of links are important for increasing search engine optimization.
    • Link to the correct anchor text. In other words link to what the content is about not the words “link here” If you read the original document which gave rise to Google at Stanford University, anchor text is absolutely critical to the Google algorithm. This is one of the most important factors in SEO.
    • Focus on deep linking to individual posts, instead of just the front page. Deep linking just means linking to the exact post or content that a particular link talks about. This helps deliver your users to your best pages and it helps direct your Google juice to where you want it to go.
    • Link out to trusted and authority sites for seo. (This just means sites Google trusts and show up high in the search results)
    • Link to similar posts on your site. Link more to the most important articles. This provides focus and accessibility for your users and for Google.

5) White Hat Linkbuilding for WordPress SEO:

    • Create user centric content. This is one way to practice User centered design
    • Make great original content. Sugar Rae helps you understand unique content.
    • Listen intently to your audience
    • Focus your blog content on your passion, experience, and your best knowledge base. This will allow you to put out consistent content and consistently quality content.
    • Ask your audience questions
    • Create pillar and authority content for search engine optimization.
    • Network with other people in your field
    • Consider getting links from non-profits and educational institutions by speaking for free or collaborating.
    • Give away free service reviews to increase search rankings and build relationships.
    • Talk with your vendors. Perhaps interview your vendors.
    • Consider using widgets to build links with your customers or fans.
    • Think about other places you could create links from where you can add value.
    • Consider guest posts or interviews
    • Pay attention to visual presentation and design for increased trust and credibility.
    • I need to work on this myself. Try conversation, not presentation. (Thanks Liz Strauss)
    • Make your users laugh
    • Inspire your users and connect with them.

6) Tracking Your SEO User Data and Results:

    • Google Analytics and Google Webmaster tools at Google Webmaster should be sufficient for most people as they get started.
    • Pay attention to the keywords that people are using to find you and what posts get the most traffic.
    • Also pay attention to where people are leaving your site.
    • After you have 6-12 months under your belt, check out user heat mapping and eye tracking software like Crazy Egg. This can help you deliver a better web experience for your visitors.
    • Pay keen attention to stats, but don’t become a statsoholic. Even the stats guru, Avinash Kaushik admits that stats don’t tell you everything. (Here is Web Analytics on an Hour A Day and here is Avinash at Google)

8) SEO for WordPress Plug-Ins

    • Stephan Spencer has a title tag plug in for WordPress that looks helpful.
    • Gabriel Goldenberg of SEO ROI has a related posts plug in for WordPress, but it probably overlaps with Yoast’s Bread crumbs. I would test both out and see which one you or your users likes the best. He recently release version 2.0
    • Yoast has a great list of wordpress plug-ins. I wouldn’t use them all, but its a great starting point for deciding which plug-ins to choose.
    • Yoast also has several helpful several WordPress plug-ins he created himself, but I would probably opt for antisocialable over his socialable plug in, because it avoids passing link juice to the social media sites.
    • As discussed before, consider a top posts and/or articles plug-in to help your users navigate your site.

9) White Hat SEO: Awesome Social Media and User Features:

    • Add a feature like User Voice or Skribit to get more 2 way conversation, community, and crowd sourcing.
    • Add intense debate for better commenting structure.
    • Consider running a poll
    • Consider a Ning or forum for your blog community.
    • Very helpful Internet marketing checklist from Search Engine Guide.
•_____________(insert your awesome SEO Tip here)_____________
    • Experiment with content, visitors, design, promotion, SEO and real world connections.
    • Design can help your SEO

10) Black Hat SEO : What to Avoid on Your WordPress Blog

    • Avoid unethical gray and black hat search engine optimization tactics.
    • Check out Yahoo’s quality content guidelines that lays out how it determines user relevance and rank. The principles apply to Google and most other search engines as well.

Basic SEO Tips for Every Blogger

My friends are you know sharing is the best way to increase your knowledge. SEO Tips to help you improve your search engine rankings and every blogger need to know seo tips. Now I share some thing about seo tips:

SEO is a word that every blogger always bothers about. Although some of those bloggers might think building active readership is more important than SEO (I do agree). But we need to give equal importance to SE0 as well, because search engines like Google always rolls out algorithm updates like Panda, Penguin, EMD (Exact Matched Domain) and we don't know which one will strike our blog. Another important thing is that if you want to make your blog rank high in SERP, you must implement Basic SEO techniques.

Here are some of those basic SEO tips that every blogger should keep in their mind to make your blog stand out from the algorithm updates.

Maintain Quality Not Quantity:

Are you known that Search Engines is always busy digging the high quality content? So, if you maintain good quality in your blog posts, your blog will be noticed by the Search Engines and will give much importance to your blog in the SERP soon.
No doubt where ever your go, you will surely read the phrase "Quality Content".

Keyword Research:

I know Keyword Research is not an easy task, you need to spend a lot of time on it to spot on the correct keyword. There are a lot of keyword research tools available, but go for Google Adwords Keyword Tool, you will get most of the data there. If you don't know how to use it, just search for the related videos on YouTube.

Link Building:

This is a bit complex issue to discuss, but you have to pay more attention while you are creating back links. Since back links must be niche-based.
For suppose if a technology blog is linked to another technology blog its fine and no problem.
But the main problem comes when a technology blog is linked to music or may be a photography blog. Since they are not of the same niche and the question rings is like. Why should a tech blog link to photography blog?
Actually backlinks should come naturally, but it is difficult so, what to do?
I suggest you to prefer Guest Slogging on a popular reputed in order to gain maximum exposure to you and your blog. Blog commenting is another good way followed by most of the newbie’s. Remember No Paid Links.

Optimization:

Suppose you wrote a blog post and ready to publish. Wait for a moment...
Read it once, place the Keyword which you are targeting in some places like Post title, Permalink, Post description, if possible in the first and last sentence of the blog post. And also don't fill up the entire post with the same keyword again and again which appears like spam. So, once you are ready to publish an article optimize it but not over Make sure that your readers will understand it alter everything done.

Keep an Eye on Search Engine:

As I said Search Engines like Google frequently updates its algorithms in order to uncover the quality content: You need to be updated time to time to escape from those Penguin kicks and Panda slaps. And learn new things in SRO always.

I things this seo tips help you improved blog site ranking.

Top 15 AdSense tips for AdSense Publisher

Google AdSense is a pay-per-click (PPC) program that can give you advertising revenue from each page on your website with a minimal investment in time and no additional resources.

AdSense delivers relevant ads that are targeted to the content people find on your site.

In many advertising networks and websites, including AdSense, the advertiser is charged for advertising their ad only when a user clicks on their ad. How much they pay (for that click) is called their Cost Per Click or CPC.

Here you will find some simple and effective AdSense tips that will increase your revenue. If you haven't already joined AdSense program, you should sign up first.

Now it's time to show you some tips and tricks that will optimize your AdSense ads.

Top 15 AdSense tips

AdSense Tip #1: Find your keywords

Before serving ads on a web page, check its keyword density. A free and advanced tool for finding the most prominent keywords in a page can be found here: SEO Density Analyzer. Copy the most important keywords to a text file ([web page name]-adsense-keywords.txt).

AdSense Tip #2: Improve your keywords

Get keyword suggestions from Overture Search Inventory and from Google AdWords Sandbox. Get new keywords that can help you improve your ad relevance. Enter the keywords from [web page name]-adsense-keywords.txt and save the suggestions to [web page name]-adsense-suggestions.txt.

AdSense Tip #3: Keep your website focused on a theme

Use the keyword suggestions to enhance your web pages and to build theme-based content. And also try to get your keywords into the anchor text of your incoming links as much as possible. Don't forget that Google AdSense is keyword-targeted advertising: Google AdSense bases its advert topics on your websites content, this means that content-rich websites of a popular topic should attract a large amount of ads.

AdSense Tip #4: Write a new page every day

One of the best tips is to add a new page to your web site every day. The more content you have, the more visitors you will get. Put an Adsense unit on each and every content page of your site. But where? You will find more about that from the next AdSense tips.

AdSense Tip #5: Choose the right AdSense format

Wider formats are successful because the ads are compact, easy to read and are complementary to the content. The top three AdSense formats are:
336x280 large rectangle
300x250 medium rectangle
160x600 wide skyscraper
Another successful format is the 468x15 horizontal ad links, that can be placed under your navigation bar.

AdSense Tip #6: Color tips

When creating your Google AdSense ads it is recommended to use the color scheme and style of your website so that the ads blend in well. Ads without background color and borders perfom better than ads within borders with background color.

Create a custom AdSense palette:
border color = background color of your web site
background color = background color of your web site
link color = blue, color of your links
url color = black, #999999
text color = black, #333333, color of your main content
You can also rotate your color palette: select multiple color palettes that blend with your site to create variety.

AdSense Tip #7: Position tips

Visitors tend to look at the big headlines to see if your page is worth reading. If you get them interested, they will read the text and look for your navigation links.

Place the AdSense ads in a prominent place around the top/left part of your page or under your headlines, where your visitors are most likely to look at.

If you have an article page with a long body of text, the bottom of that article is a good place for AdSense ads because your visitors read the text and then they want more resources.

AdSense Tip #8: Increase the number of ads, but not too much

If you have a lot of text on a page, use multiple AdSense units. You can use up to three AdSense units on a page, two AdSense search boxes and one unit of ad links.

Link units allow the user to refine what they're interested in. So if they may not be interested in specific ads on your page, they might be interested in a particular topic, and by clicking on a link unit and a link in the link unit, they'll be able to specify that they're interested in that specific topic and get a lot more options and variety on the ads that might appear.

AdSense for Search allows visitors to search Google.com or your sites (up to 3 domains). You earn money whenever they click on the ads that come up on the search results. If you click the Open search results in a new browser window checkbox in the AdSense for Search settings, you won't lose your visitors.

AdSense Tip #9: Preview Google ads

You can find out what ads will be served by Google AdSense if you install Google AdSense Preview Tool, a very simple tool available only for Internet Explorer 6.0. Click to advertiser sites without generating invalid clicks, and easily add their URLs to your URL filter list. Because AdSense uses geo-targeting, Google serves different ads for other countries. Instead of faking your IP or travelling abroad to test your ads, use this AdSense tool to see what ads see your visitors from France, Germany or other countries.

There may be no Google AdSense ads available for your webpage, so Googlw will display Public Service Ads. You can hide them using alternate colors or images. Make sure you include the image in a simple html file as a link (use target="_top"). The image size should be the same as the dimension of AdSense units. In the alternate url box, enter the absolute url of the html file.

Read more about alternate ads.

AdSense Tip #10: What not to do

Don't click on your own ads
Don't ask others to click on your Google ads
Don't manually change AdSense code
Don't place Google ads on sites that include prohibited content (e.g.: adult sites)
Don't employ cloaking, hidden text or farm links
Don't use AdSense ads on the same page with similar ads (e.g.: Yahoo Publisher Network)

AdSense Tip #11: Show images above or next to your ads

Placing images above AdSense ads is not necessarily prohibited by program policies. However, depending on the method of implementation this could be considered encouraging users to click on ads. So you should include a border line between the ads and the images. Don't show specific products in your images, in order not to mislead the visitors. Just use generic images that will increase the visibility of your ads.

AdSense Tip #12: Use section targeting

Use section targeting to emphasize some content in your page. On your site, place this code where you want to emphasize.

<!-- google_ad_section_start -->
Content you want to emphasize.
<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

If you want some content to be ignored, use

<!-- google_ad_section_start(weight=ignore) -->

AdSense Tip #13: Alternate the colors of your ads

AdSense allows you to have up to 4 color variations for each variable for which you can specify color. You should do that if you put AdSense ads on pages that receive many impressions from the same visitors (for example forums) to reduce ad blindness. For example:
google_color_border = ["628098","628098","000000","000000"];
google_color_link = ["000000","BBB90C","BBB90C","628098"];
google_color_url = ["000000","628098","000000","000000"];
google_color_text = ["628098","628098","000000","000000"];

AdSense Tip #14: Your Google ads should be visible

Make sure your text ads are visible to the surfers in all screen formats. If you put the ads in a table, give sufficient breathing room, i.e. proper cell padding and cell spacing to make the ads stand out from the rest of your content.

AdSense Tip #15: Use AdSense channels

You can categorize the content of your website into channels and then track your performance. This way you can experiment with different types of ads and see which is performing the best. Instead of buying an AdSense tracker, you can enter the most important pages in your site and see how they are doing. Create up to 200 channels for AdSense.

Using SEO Phrases and Keywords Outside Written Text

SEO keywords and phrases must be used within the content – this is known to all expert content creators. But you should not forget that these keywords should also be placed in some other elements outside the content. For instance, using the keyword in images further increases the visibility of your content.

Put SEO in the Site Design

Webmasters design a website without considering the SEO factor. What they do is first design the site and then think of adding SEO into it. This is completely a wrong approach. The ideal way to design a website is by abiding by the SEO principles. You should have navigation and links in your site that will increase the visibility and traffic of your site.
Add the necessary links as well as eliminate the unnecessary scripting so that the website acquires a top position in Google search results.

Five Ways to Increase Blog Traffic

Blogging is an excellent way to increase traffic for a website. Studies have shown that compelling and educational content will keep visitors on a website once they reach a landing page. In fact, Google also supports this finding by ranking websites based on the uniqueness and relevancy of the content on the blog. Websites with relevant content that is updated frequently are more apt to be ranked higher and obtain more traffic. Since blogs are essential to traffic increase, bloggers must constantly work to improve their websites and determine better ways to improve.
Here are a five ways for bloggers to improve their blog traffic to their websites:

Five Ways to Increase Blog Traffic

1. Write Content Frequently.

Write more content to increase website traffic. The content should be educational, authoritative and keyword-rich. The content on a website should be constantly changing to attract web crawlers and build relevant links. This will help to improve website traffic a company’s website. If the company’s primary website hosts blogs, this will attract traffic and establish the business as an authority in the industry. If the website hosts general blogs on a particular topic, links can be established to a company’s website. This will also generate traffic.

2. Monitor Your Blog Activity with Google Analytics

Monitor your blog with Google Analytic s. Evaluate the statistics and make adjustments accordingly. Keyword monitoring is one important aspect to monitor in Google Analytics. Consumers can determine which keywords are generating traffic and which keywords are not performing. Content can be rewritten or modified to reflect new keywords.
Blogs are dynamic. Companies must constantly evaluate the blogs to determine what changes can be made. Bloggers that become complacent will not generate the type of traffic they desire.

3. Write a Post About a Celebrity

Write a post about a celebrity to generate traffic for a blog. The simple use of a celebrity name will generate significant traffic. Celebrity name use could refer to an endorsement, or it could refer to how the celebrity has used a product or service in their lives. If the celebrity’s name is mentioned in the news frequently, expect the traffic to increase significantly. A simple mention of a celebrity name can quadruple traffic to a site. Many bloggers have found this technique effective.

How Can You Increase Visitors to your Website?

Increase Visitors to Your Website

While researching some ways to build traffic to my site I began to ponder how to increase visitors to my website. I began to realize the necessity to get traffic to my website and became somewhat frustrated very quickly. The truth was that I needed to get more traffic to my blog but did not even have a clue how to proceed to get it.

Getting more visitors to your site requires some work but it can be done in time with a little patience. You are going to have to be able to put in some time doing keyword research and writing articles. So,in order to get more visitors to my site I had learned that I was going to have to get in there and really go to work and there really was going to be no other way. Each one of the traffic methods here will require some work on your part but, are absolutely free and doable if you set your mind to it.
Video Marketing
Video marketing is a great way of getting more visitors to your site. Drive traffic to your website by creating a video showcasing the content on your website and upload it to YouTube or the other sites, such as Flickr or Vimeo, for example. Be sure and put your website's link there so that those who visit your video can find their way back to your site. Video marketing can go viral quickly and will boost your traffic tremendously. Be sure and use the YouTube keyword tool to help you with your video title and tags.

Keyword Research

I use keyword research to get more traffic to my blog. Using a free keyword tool to find the keywords with low competition and just the right amount of monthly searches can greatly increase your visibility on the search engines. With the correct keyword research technique you can get your page ranked and even take the number one spot.
Learning keyword research should be number one on your list before you even choose your domain name because you should include your best keyword in your title and in your domain name as well when at all possible. I quickly learned that keyword research is vital to get more visitors to my site.

Article Marketing

How can I increase visitors to my website has always been a looming question on my mind. And article marketing seems to be the most popular answer by far. Article marketing is an inexpensive way of driving traffic to your site.
You can write them yourself or outsource your writing and then submit those articles to a number of directories. This builds back links and increases visibility of you site as well. Since you leave your website URL in the article resource box of all the different directories and/or e-zines this creates a viral action that just screams authority for your site.
Some ways to build traffic to my site are easier than article marketing but none are as effective because articles create an avenue for the search engines to index your website. Those searching are able to find your site much easier and this makes your keywords stand out in with the search engines.
How can I increase visitors to my website has become a less challenging question in my endeavors to get more visitors to my site since I have discovered the vast importance of proper keyword research and significance of article writing.
This has been just some ways to build traffic to my site that I have shared with you here that unquestionably helped me to get more traffic to my blog and will help you to be getting more visitors to your site if you will use them to your best advantage.

Where are the Money in Blogging?

Money in Blogging

The money’s not in your archives.
The money’s not in your Technorati rank.
The money’s not in your Google juice.
The money’s not in being on the A-List.
The money’s not in AdSense.
There is money in page views at this point, but you’ll need a whole, whole bunch of them (which means you’ll need a whole, whole bunch of return visits).
Since the old days of mail order sales, magazine subscriptions, and all the way up to permission email marketing, there’s a saying that remains true, even for bloggers.

The money’s in the list.
But blogging actually provides so much more than a simple subscriber list of people to market to. Blogging allows for interactive relationships that force you to be your best, all while allowing your message to spread virally.
So, when it comes to blogging…
The money’s in your fan club.
Sound like the start of a new tutorial, right?
And this one is soooo money. :)

Why You Can not Make Money Blogging?

I was a little surprised this morning when, after I’d given a talk on business blogging, a seminar attendee asked if I’d seen the Newsweek article this week on why it’s impossible to make money with blogs.
“Guess I’ll give it all back, then,” was my off-the-cuff answer.
But out of curiosity, I picked the mag up on the way back to my room. If you haven’t seen it, Daniel Lyons, a talented blogger known for two years as “Fake Steve Jobs,” has an editorial that explains why none of us can make money blogging.

Big traffic, no money

Fake Steve Jobs’ best month came with a traffic spike. His actual identity was revealed in the New York Times, sending more than a half-million people to his site in a single day.
His payout? For that half-million-visitor day, about a hundred dollars in AdSense earning. For the entire month, he made $1,03.81.
Not quite what he was hoping for when he became a celebrity blogger and earned an impressive amount of attention and notoriety.
So if Fake Steve Jobs can’t monetize a blog, the rest of us are doomed, right? He worked hard, he created quality content, he had a terrific angle that went nicely viral. He was at the pinnacle, and he’s broke. So we will be too.
It must be true, he said it in Newsweek.
I learned the hard way: while blogs can do many wonderful things, making huge amounts of money isn’t one of them.

The expert weighs in

The article then tapped another source for a little expert credibility, Paul Verna, an analyst with eMarketer.
Verna’s take was that the real issue was “the lack of a clear business model that can generate substantial revenues.”
Verna’s on the right track, but we’re still a long way from the core problem.
If your business model is “I want to make money on the Internet,” you’re not going to get very far. The Internet is profoundly indifferent to your desire to make money with it.
Please notice that this does not mean that “there is no possible viable business model for any blog, other than a few fortunate exceptions that prove the rule,” which was the conclusion Lyons reached.
It just means that Fake Steve Jobs didn’t come up with a working business model, so he didn’t make any money.

Blogs are not television

I’ll confess, I have no idea how to monetize Fake Steve Jobs. His readers aren’t coming to his site to solve any kind of real-world problem, other than “how can I kill 10 minutes before my boss gets back from lunch?”
Television networks produce entertainment. They either make money from advertising or, for premium cable channels, from subscriptions.
If you want to watch Lost, you have to watch ads. Tivo dented that model considerably, but it still works well enough for now.
Advertising can work on some content web sites, but it usually works best when the reader is coming to the site to figure out a solution to a problem. If an ad presents a relevant solution to that problem, the ad can be effective.
For a complex bunch of reasons, advertising isn’t especially effective on most blogs. Unless there’s a terrific message-to-market match, ads on blogs tend to under perform wildly.

If you want to make money in the real world, solve real problems

Too bad Lyons wasn’t a Copyblogger reader. He might have seen Brian’s post about the smartest monetization strategies for blogs and content sites, and why advertising is no longer on that list.
It’s not about trends in advertising or trends in the blogosphere. It’s about returning to a fundamental marketing truth.
If you don’t offer customers something they dearly want, whether it’s to gain some great pleasure or escape some great pain, you’re not going to make any money.
People do want entertainment and relief from boredom, but selling pure entertainment online is tricky. Right now the expectation on the web is that entertainment is free. You’ll have to get creative to escape that context, the same way musicians had to get creative to make a living when free music sharing became the norm.

It’s time for online business to grow up

For a long time, we believed that “online was different,” and that we didn’t need to accept any of the normal rules of business. We’d put something on the web and Magic Internet Dust would come along and make up for our total absence of business knowledge.
“Leap, and the net will appear,” was the mantra.
That sort of worked for awhile, but it doesn’t work now. If you don’t have a solid understanding of who your market is, how they’ll find you, and what problems you solve for them, it’s now “Leap, and the floor will appear.”
So focus on what does work now, and has always worked.
Provide value. Solve actual problems. Uncover what’s bugging people and fix it for them.
The real Steve Jobs sells beautiful, easy-to-use, loveable tools that make his customers’ lives better. If Fake Steve Jobs wanted to make money, he would have had to do some work to figure out how he could do the same.

Make Money Blogging.

Make Money Blogging

Do you want to make money blogging? If you do – you’re not alone. More and more bloggers are finding that blogging is a profitable medium. Whether it be to earn a few extra dollars a week to feed their coffee habit, or making enough money to stop them having to get a part time job to get through college, or whether they’ve got it to a point where they are able to make a full time living from their blogging – there are tens of thousands of bloggers who make money blogging.

How to Make Money Blogging

In this page I want to share some information for beginners on how to make money blogging. For a very quick and broad visual intro – check out this Make Money Blogging MindMap which visualizes just SOME of the ways bloggers make money blogging.

First – let me start by sharing my own top Money Making Methods (updated regularly) but below that point you to some great resources and teaching on how to increase your income from blogging.

How I Make Money BloggingWhat follows is a quick summary of my main income streams from blogging. Before you read it though – keep in mind that every blog is unique in how it can make money. Some of the following income streams will work on some blogs a lot better than others – the key is to experiment with as many as possible and see what works best for you.

The following income streams (from a number of blogs) have helped me to earn a six figure income each year for the last 5 years from blogging. I’ve ranked them from highest to lowest.

I hope you find it useful to see the mix and variety of ways that I earn a living from blogging.

1. AdSense:

Adsense Despite not using it here at ProBlogger any more (here’s why) I continue to use AdSense with amazing effect on my other blogs. I have them all set to show image and text based ads and find that 250×300 pixel ads work best (usually with a blended design). I don’t have much luck with their ‘referrals’ program but their normal ads work a treat and continue to be the biggest earner for me.

2. Affiliate Programs:

miscellaneous affiliate programsI run a variety of affiliate programs on my blogs – most of which bring in smaller amounts of money that don’t really justify a category of their own (but which certainly add up).

These include recommending quality products like these here on ProBlogger: Thesis WordPress theme, Yaro’s Blog Mastermind Coaching Program and How to Launch the F*** out of your E-Book (and others) as well as some great products on my photography blog including 123 of Digital Imaging, David DuChemin’s amazing Photography E-Books and Mitchell Kanashkevich’s great ebooks.

The great thing about many of these programs is that they are of such high quality that they sell themselves and I am being emailed from readers who sign up to them thanking me for the recommendation!

3. E-Book Sales:

make-money-blogging-ebooks.jpgLast time I did a wrap up of how I make money blogging this category did not exist for me – I didn’t really have any of my own products to sell at all. However in the last year or so I’ve released 3 E-books – 31 Days to Build a Better Blog, The Essential Guide to Portrait Photography and Photo Nuts and Bolts: Know Your Camera and Take Better Photos. While these products all only sell for under $20 they certainly add up and some months this has been my biggest category of income. The reason they were only ranking at #3 in the last month was that I didn’t do a product launch (I wrote about one launch which brought in $72,000 in a week here). This is an income stream I see growing as I add more E-books to my range (expect 3 in the coming few months).

4. Continuity Programs:

make-money-blogging-continuity.jpgThis is another newer category for me but one that continues to grow.

A continuity program is a site where you earn a recurring income from people who subscribe to a service you offer.

For me this includes two sites – ProBlogger.com and Third Tribe Marketing. Both programs are membership sites and generate monthly income from the thousands of members that they have as a part of them.

5. Private Ad Sales/Sponsorships:

private-ad-salesPrivate ad sales directly to advertisers have fallen for me in the last year (they previously ranked #3 on this list). This is partly due to a change in my own focus but also partly due to the economy as it is. I should note that this area does vary a little from month to month depending upon the campaigns we’re asked to run – we’ve had a couple of months where it actually ranked #2 in the last year.

This includes ad sales of the 125 x 125 ads here at ProBlogger as well as a campaign or two at Digital Photography School.

6. Chitika:

Chitka continues to be a great performer for me on my blogs. They traditionally have worked best on product related blogs although their Premium ad units now convert well on a larger range of blogs.

While I’ve focused a little less on Chitika in the last 6 months (mainly as I’ve released my own products and moved a little away from advertising) they do continue to perform well where I use them and over the time I’ve been using Chitika they’ve now earned me over a quarter of a million dollars – as a result I can’t recommend them enough!

7. Amazon Associates:

Amazon’s affiliate program has been one of my big movers in the last 12 months. I used to make a few odd dollars from it – however in recent times it has become a significant earner for me (in fact it’s now earned me over $100,000 since I started using it). Christmas time (and the lead up to it) is a particularly good time for Amazon – last December it would have ranked #2 on this list.

8. ProBlogger Job Boards:

make-money-blogging-job-board The job boards here at ProBlogger continue to grow each month in the number of advertisements that are being bought. This enabled me to invest most of the money that they’d earned a while back into getting a new back end for the boards and to redesign them. These job boards now bring in over $1000 a month in revenue which is pretty nice considering that they are so low maintenance to run. They also offer a service to readers and add value to the overall blog.

The only problem that I face with the job boards is that there are so many bloggers looking for work that the demand for jobs far exceeds the supply. On the good side of things is that advertisers are reporting getting amazing quality of applications.

9. Speaking Fees:

I get asked to do a lot of speaking and increasingly they are paid opportunities. I’m not able to do as many as I would like (mainly because I live in Australia and most of what I’m asked to do is overseas and I only travel 2-3 times a year) – however in April I did a couple of events and the income was enough to include in this list.
Other Income

In addition to all of the above there are many smaller incomes. Many of these are from smaller advertising programs that I test but none are big enough to really rate a mention here.

The other income stream that there was no actual money from in April was book royalties from the ProBlogger Book. These are only paid every 6 or so months (not in April). It’s probably also worth mentioning that authors don’t tend to make a whole lot of money on book royalties – you don’t write books to get rich (unless you sell a lot of them).

Useful Resources for Bloggers Wanting to Make Money Blogging

A lot has been written on the topic of making money online from blogs. There is a lot of wonderful information out there – but also a lot of hype and sometimes dangerous information.

Below are a number of articles that I’ve written exploring some of the different ways that bloggers make money.
